Why hiring data predicts revenue, how funds use it, and what to look for in a job-postings dataset.
Why hiring leads revenue
Companies hire before they grow: sales teams before revenue ramps, engineers before product launches, operations staff before expansion. Because postings are public and timestamped, a well-built job-postings dataset becomes a leading indicator of company intentions — often quarters ahead of filings.
What funds measure
Common signals include hiring growth rates by function (engineering vs sales), posting lifetimes (how fast roles close), and unusual spikes around product or market moves. Aggregated hiring indices also work at sector and macro level.
Dataset quality bar
Look for open and close timestamps (point-in-time), deduplicated postings across job boards, role normalization, and history depth. Global coverage with hourly refresh is the current state of the art.
