Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem (CDSE) is the data access, processing, and visualization gateway of the European Union's Copernicus Earth observation programme, operated under the guidance of the European Space Agency (ESA). Launched in January 2023, it provides free, instant access to data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellite missions and related collections covering the planet's land, oceans, and atmosphere.[1][2]

The platform replaced the earlier Copernicus Open Science Hub and extended it with new APIs (OData, STAC, openEO, Sentinel Hub), a browser-based visualization interface, in-browser coding environments, and cloud processing capacity.[2] It is built and run by a consortium of European service providers including T-Systems, CloudFerro, Sinergise, VITO Remote Sensing, DLR, ACRI-ST, and RHEA Group.[1]

What It Does

CDSE is the operational entry point for Copernicus satellite data: it distributes imagery from the Sentinel missions, datasets produced by the Copernicus Services, high-resolution data from Contributing Missions, and federated and complementary third-party collections.[1]

Beyond download, it hosts analysis capabilities that let users process data where it resides, targeting institutional users, research, and the commercial sector.[1]

Products And Tools

Core tools include the Copernicus Browser for viewing, analyzing, and downloading imagery; openEO, an open-source API for cloud-based Earth-observation processing; a Data Workspace for generating products on demand; a hosted JupyterLab environment; and a Traceability service for verifying product authenticity and detecting tampering.[1]

A STAC-compliant catalog supports discovery across collections, and the Sentinel Hub processing API is offered through the ecosystem for users who want analysis without maintaining their own infrastructure.[1]

Data And Methodology

The underlying observations come from the Sentinel families operated by ESA, spanning radar imaging (Sentinel-1), multispectral optical imaging at up to 10 m resolution (Sentinel-2), ocean and land monitoring (Sentinel-3), atmospheric composition sensing (Sentinel-4, -5P, -5), and high-precision altimetry (Sentinel-6), with six additional Sentinel Expansion Missions under development.[2]

The free and open data policy of Copernicus is described by ESA as the cornerstone of the programme; the underlying legal basis, Regulation (EU) No 377/2014, makes Copernicus data available free-of-charge to all users.[1][2]

Buyers And Use Cases

There is no commercial price: access is free with registration. Documented use cases on the platform include forest-fire mapping with machine learning via openEO's Random Forest processes, cropland monitoring with ESA WorldCereal, land-cover monitoring, agriculture, and natural-hazard response.[1]

For alternative-data consumers, Sentinel-derived series are used to build indicators such as crop health, construction activity, shipping, and storage levels, typically via commercial resellers or direct API pipelines on CDSE.

History

Copernicus evolved from the EU's GMES initiative, was established by Regulation (EU) No 377/2014, and became fully operational in 2014; since 2021 it has been a component of the EU Space Programme.[2] The Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem was launched in January 2023 as the programme's new gateway, adding OData, STAC, openEO, and Sentinel Hub APIs, the Copernicus Browser, JupyterLab, openEO interfaces, and on-board cloud processing compared with the earlier Open Science Hub.[2]

The platform continues to publish regular product updates, such as new Copernicus Land Monitoring Service releases and Sentinel processing-baseline changes.[1]
