Dataset card
This dataset provides 165,917 US design patents absent from the AI4Patents/IMPACT corpus, covering grant years 2008 through 2026. It bundles original TIFF drawing images and grant full-text XML retrieved from USPTO weekly archives, packaged as year-by-year zstd-compressed tar files.
What this dataset contains
The release supplies two artifacts per patent: a set of TIFF drawing images and the grant full-text XML, organized by grant year. Most of the 165,917 patents come from 2023-2026, which fall outside IMPACT's 2007-2022 coverage window, while the remainder are 2008-2022 grants that IMPACT omitted. The patents span 34 USPC design classes and have figure-type labels such as perspective, front, and overview.
Structure and fields
Top-level layout groups archives by grant year under an images/{year}.tar.zst path, accompanied by a manifest _manifest/{year}.tsv listing every archive member with its path and bytes, plus _report/sha256.txt with SHA-256 hashes and _report/build.txt describing how the archives were produced. Inside each archive, one directory per patent (for example USD0973998-20230103) holds TIFFs named D00000.TIF onward and a grant XML file. The published tabular split exposes just two columns, path and bytes, reflecting the manifest rather than per-patent metadata.
How analysts use it
Analysts studying design-patent activity outside the IMPACT era can use the collection to extend coverage through 2026, with TIFF drawings suited to image-based modeling and XML grants providing bibliographic and classification text. The figure-type breakdown supports filtering for perspective, front, or overview drawings when training or evaluating design-similarity models. For competitive-intelligence or IP-strategy workflows, the dataset offers a way to monitor 2023-2026 design grants that other open repositories currently miss.
