Dataset card
Clinical Trials Sponsor Analytics is a tabular dataset aggregating one row per sponsor of trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. The hosted version is a 10% sample of 10,220 sponsors and is published under a CC BY 4.0 license, with the full dataset offered separately by the publisher.
What this dataset contains
The table summarises each sponsor's clinical-trial portfolio, including counts of total, active, completed and failed trials, as well as a breakdown by phase using the phase_1_count through phase_4_count fields. Derived metrics include completion_rate, avg_duration_days, and a primary_therapeutic_focus label generated via AI-based classification. Trial data is sourced from the ClinicalTrials.gov API, and therapeutic area and sponsor type labels are produced through Claude AI classification combined with regex and keyword rules.
Structure and fields
Each row is keyed by sponsor (string) with an associated sponsor_type. Volume is captured by total_trials, active_trials, completed_trials, and failed_trials as int64 fields, with phase-level counts as phase_1_count through phase_4_count. Performance is captured numerically by completion_rate (decimal128(4,3)) and avg_duration_days (decimal128(4,0)), while the date fields are date32. The sample split contains 1,022 rows in parquet format and is loadable with pandas or polars.
How analysts use it
Healthcare-focused investment analysts can screen biotech and pharma sponsors by pipeline activity using active_trials, phase_2_count and phase_3_count, or by productivity using completion_rate and avg_duration_days. The primary_therapeutic_focus and therapeutic_area_count fields support portfolio concentration analysis across therapeutic areas. Because the hosted file is a 10% sample, users requiring exhaustive coverage would need to license the full 10,220-sponsor dataset from the publisher.
