The us-patents-citation-company-dataset, published by zalizedata, packages 9.1 million US patents (1976–present) from USPTO and PatentsView with the full citation graph, assignees, inventors and CPC classifications. The combined train split contains 255,347,795 rows across ten parquet-based configs and is released under CC BY-NC 4.0.
What this dataset contains
The package mirrors PatentsView bulk data and adds a curated company-level layer produced by DataForge. Configs include assignee_entities, assignees, citations, company_citations, company_profiles, citation_metrics, cpc, cpc_trends, inventors and patents, with tier1 medium and small releases archived as dated zip packages. Attribution for the underlying PatentsView content remains CC BY 4.0.
Structure and fields
Rows are delivered as parquet shards under per-config directories and can be loaded via pandas, polars, duckdb or the Hugging Face datasets API. The assignee_entities schema exposes assignee_id, canonical_name, name_harmonized, company_group, is_individual, country, n_patents, first_grant_year and last_grant_year, with the broader package covering citation edges and CPC class codes. A machine-readable data dictionary and datasheet are bundled inside each archive zip.
How analysts use it
Analysts typically aggregate n_patents and citation counts by company_group and CPC code to track corporate R&D intensity, technology focus and citation-weighted influence over time. The dataset is freely usable for academic and personal research under its non-commercial license, and the assignee harmonization layer supports constructing peer benchmark panels across public companies. Investment-fund deployment is limited by the CC BY-NC 4.0 restriction.
