ExtractAlpha

From AltData.wiki, The Alternative Data Encyclopedia

ExtractAlpha is an alternative-data research and analytics company serving quantitative investors, fund managers, brokerages, and financial-technology firms. It distributes raw datasets, derived trading and risk signals, research documentation, and products associated with the crowdsourced-estimates platform Estimize.[1]

Vinesh Jha founded ExtractAlpha in 2013. The company says it acquired Estimize in 2021, after which Jha served as chief executive of both entities.[2] A third-party marketplace classifies ExtractAlpha as a provider of stock-market and alternative data and lists Hong Kong as its headquarters.[3]

What It Does

ExtractAlpha identifies data that may contain information relevant to security returns, researches that data, and offers either the underlying records or signals derived from them. Its website describes the firm as an external alternative-data research function for investors and says its materials can include white papers, data dictionaries, and methodology descriptions.[1]

This model differs from a provider focused on one collection channel such as foot traffic. ExtractAlpha's role can include selecting, normalizing, testing, and packaging datasets from multiple domains. Datarade independently describes the output as both raw and derived data for quantitative investors, together with a visualization front end called Insight for fundamental investors.[3]

Products

The company's top-level product groups are Datasets, AlphaClub, and Estimize. ExtractAlpha markets the datasets and signals with different forecast horizons and says the associated histories range from years to decades. It also reports coverage of most United States equities and nearly 30,000 securities globally.[1] These coverage figures are company statements and may differ by individual product.

Estimize contributes crowdsourced financial estimates to the combined offering. A contemporaneous Business Wire announcement described the 2021 transaction as a merger of ExtractAlpha and Estimize intended to create a broader alternative-data platform.[4] The current ExtractAlpha site instead uses the word acquired; the two descriptions agree on the year and combination but differ in transaction terminology.[2]

Data And Methodology

ExtractAlpha says that all data it offers has been validated for alpha and is ready for testing.[1] In this context, validation is a vendor research process, not a guarantee of future returns. Predictive relationships can weaken after publication, vary across universes and transaction-cost assumptions, or arise from overfitting and revisions to historical data.

Institutional evaluation should therefore examine the point-in-time construction of each dataset, ticker mapping, survivorship controls, release lag, missing records, restatements, turnover, capacity, and performance after realistic costs. A buyer also needs to distinguish a raw observation from an ExtractAlpha-derived score because each creates different dependencies on the vendor's methodology.

Delivery And Pricing

The public materials describe raw feeds, trading signals, and a front-end visualization product, but do not publish standard delivery schedules or subscription prices.[1][3] Datarade likewise states that ExtractAlpha has not published pricing on its marketplace profile and directs buyers to contact the provider.[3]

Product-level documentation is therefore necessary to establish file format, update frequency, history, identifiers, revision policy, permitted users, and redistribution rights. The availability of research documents is useful for due diligence but does not replace an independent backtest using the buyer's own investable universe and execution assumptions.

Buyers And Use Cases

ExtractAlpha identifies hedge funds, asset managers, brokerages, and fintech companies as users.[1] Quantitative teams can ingest signals into ranking or risk models; fundamental investors can use a visualization layer to screen securities and investigate unusual observations; data vendors can work with the company to test whether a source contains investable information.

The company says its clients collectively manage more than US$10.9 trillion.[1] That is an aggregate marketing claim, not a measure of assets invested using ExtractAlpha products, and it was not independently verified by the sources reviewed. No public price list, customer-level performance record, or complete customer roster was located.

History

ExtractAlpha identifies Jha as its founder and says his earlier career included directing quantitative research at StarMine and developing systematic strategies at Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and PDT Partners.[2] The company dates its own establishment to 2013.[2]

The combination with Estimize in 2021 broadened the organization beyond externally sourced datasets and derived signals to include a platform built around contributor estimates.[2][4] Public sources reviewed did not establish financing amounts, ownership percentages, or financial terms for that transaction.
