History
ICEYE was founded in 2014 in Espoo, Finland by Rafał Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila as a spin-off of Aalto University's Radio Technology Department. In January 2018 it launched ICEYE-X1, the first satellite under 100 kg carrying synthetic aperture radar and the first Finnish commercial satellite. Commercial access to one-meter Spotlight imagery began in October 2019 when the constellation comprised three satellites.[2]
In August 2022 the company provided Ukraine's armed forces access to a satellite under a contract with the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation. By December 2025 the company had announced 62 satellites launched. Rafał Modrzewski remains CEO and chairman.[2]
Landscape
ICEYE competes with other commercial SAR operators such as Capella Space and Umbra, and with government systems like Sentinel-1. It differs from optical earth observation providers such as Planet Labs and Satellogic in that radar imagery is unaffected by cloud and darkness.[1][2]
Financially, Wikipedia reports 2023 revenues of about 100 million dollars, roughly doubled to around 200 million euros for 2025, cumulative funding above 650 million dollars by December 2025, and a June 2026 raise of over one billion euros at a valuation exceeding ten billion euros.[2]
